What You Need to Know
What is FIRS e-invoicing and why is it called the Merchant Buyer Solution?
FIRS is the authority. The actual system businesses log into is named the Merchant Buyer Solution, or MBS. People use the two names interchangeably, but technically, MBS is the platform, and FIRS is who’s enforcing it.
When does my business need to comply with FIRS e-invoicing?
Large taxpayers went first. If your turnover sits above ₦5 billion, you’ve already been live since late 2025. Mid-sized businesses get phased in across 2026. Smaller enterprises have until July 2027 before their deadline lands.
Can I still send PDF invoices to my customers in Nigeria?
No, and a digital signature won’t save it either. FIRS only recognizes structured XML files that have gone through MBS clearance. A PDF, however official it looks, simply won’t register as compliant.
What is an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and why does it matter?
Every invoice that clears FIRS gets tagged with an IRN and a cryptographic signature. Skip that step, or fail clearance, and the invoice has no legal standing — it’s basically paperwork that doesn’t count
What happens if my supplier sends me an invoice that isn't FIRS-cleared?
That input VAT you were counting on? You can’t claim it on an unstamped invoice. It’s part of why Advintek looks at what’s coming in from suppliers, not just what you’re sending out — catching the gaps before they cost you.
What is Advintek's role as an Access Point Provider in Nigeria?
Being an Access Point Provider means Advintek handles the signing, transmission, and reporting side of things directly with FIRS. You’re not stuck building that connection yourself.
Does Advintek support the four-corner Peppol model required by FIRS?
Yes — supplier, supplier’s access point, buyer’s access point, buyer. That’s the four-corner setup FIRS runs on, and it’s exactly how Advintek routes your invoices through.
What format does FIRS require for structured e-invoices?
FIRS wants the BIS Billing 3.0 UBL standard, which comes with 55 required fields spread across eight categories. Advintek handles that formatting automatically, so you’re not mapping fields by hand.
How does B2C invoice reporting differ from B2B under FIRS rules?
B2B invoices go through pre-clearance before they ever reach the buyer. B2C works the other way — the receipt with its QR code goes out right away, then gets reported back to FIRS within 24 hours.
What penalties apply for missing the FIRS e-invoicing deadline?
Penalties escalate under the Tax Administration Act, and you’ll also lose the ability to claim VAT input on affected invoices. There’s a quieter cost too — B2B partners and banks tend to steer clear of vendors who can’t produce compliant paperwork.
Which ERP and accounting systems can Advintek connect to FIRS?
QuickBooks, Xero, MYOB, Zoho Books, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics — Advintek plugs into all of these directly, so invoice data moves across automatically instead of being typed in twice.
Should small businesses start preparing before their compliance date arrives?
It’s worth it even if your deadline is years out. Businesses that wait until the last few months usually end up rushing system changes under pressure — starting early with Advintek means testing is already done by the time enforcement hits.
Does Advintek handle cross-border and non-resident invoicing for Nigeria?
Domestic and cross-border supplies are both covered under FIRS rules. Non-resident suppliers are expected to be pulled into scope sometime in 2026, and when that happens, your setup with Advintek won’t need to change.
How does Advintek keep up with Nigeria's evolving tax reform rules?
Nigeria’s tax rules don’t sit still, and Advintek’s compliance team is watching every FIRS and Tax Reform Act change as it lands. Updates get pushed into the system fast enough that your invoicing never drifts out of step.
What data security standards does Advintek apply to Nigerian invoice data?
Advintek runs on ISO 27001:2022 certification — encrypted storage, controlled access, the works — for every invoice that passes through the FIRS network.
What support does Advintek provide during FIRS onboarding and beyond?
You get a choice of 8×5, 16×5, or 24×7 support, plus a dedicated account manager who actually knows your setup. The team handling it is based in Nigeria, not routed through some overseas call center.
